Online Associate’s Degree Programs Expand The Education Reach

For the busy student who holds down a job, or perhaps has family responsibilities, online degree programs can be a blessing. Many students also participate in community college studies, which tend to offer some of the most affordable tuition rates. With distance learning opportunities available from community colleges as well as from four-year colleges and universities and graduate schools, students might even work toward their two-year degrees online.

Nursing might not be the first Associate’s degree program that comes to mind when students think of online degree offerings. However, the Community College Times reports that there’s a demand for flexibility in nursing programs that has contributed to an increase in online college enrollments. Between 2007 and 2008, information from the Instructional Technology Council shows, two-year degree-granting community colleges cited a 22 percent increase in online college programming enrollments.

The Community College Times told of Associate’s degree programs that several community colleges are offering online. One of them, in Kentucky, allows students to either graduate as an LPN or earn an Associate’s degree in nursing, and it attracts working LPNs who want to obtain RN certification as well as those with Bachelor’s degrees who want to train for new careers. A US Air Force technical sergeant with goals of becoming a public health practitioner is among those working towards an online Associate’s degree in nursing from a Maryland community college at the same time as she pursues a Master’s degree in public health from another institution, the Community College Times reported. Help Finding Money For College

The college search can be overwhelming for both parents and children. The dollar signs seem to flash everywhere and if you haven’t put any money aside you may think you can not afford college. Take heart, even if you haven’t set money aside there are all kinds of financial aid programs that your student may qualify for. Before you even start thinking about cost though consider where your child wants to go to school. This can be a difficult decision in itself but there are ways to narrow down the choices.

If your child already knows what he or she wants to major in then your choice of colleges is easier. You can use a college guide such as Barron’s, Petersen’s or Fiske’s to check out schools which are strong in your child’s area of interest. These guides are big thick reference books which can be somewhat expensive. To save money you can check these books out of your local library. The library will have the most recent copy which will be the one you want. You can probably use an edition that is maybe a year or two old but don’t go back any further than that because things change rapidly in the college world.

For children who are not really sure what they want to do, take a look at colleges that offer liberal arts programs or possibly community colleges. To save money many students decide to take courses at the local community colleges and then do their last two years at a four year college. Another way to help narrow down the choices here is to have your child decide what size school they want and what geographic area they want to be in. Some kids want to stay close to home, others are okay with being far away. Read the rest of this entry »
